Figures of speech 1

There are 23 figures of speech of which we will discuss four now.

 1. SIMILE
In simile two unlike things are usually compared. For example, “She is like a lion”.

 A simile is introduced by words such as _like, so, as etc._
Example includes;
*Bola drink _like_ a horse
*She is _as beautiful as_ a queen
* He smiles _like_ the sun

 2. METAPHOR
It is exactly like simile also for comparison but without like, as and so. For example, “He is like a lion (Simile) “and “He is a lion (metaphor)”. The following are examples of metaphors.

*She is a star of our family.
*The childhood of the world; *The anger of the tempest; *The deceitfulness of the riches:
* wine is a mocker.
*She is now in the sunset of her days.

 3. PERSONIFICATION
Personification is an attribution of personal nature, intelligence or character to nonliving objects or abstract notions

For example,
 *the furious storm,
*the thirsty ground,
* the pitiless cold.

Some other examples are:
Little sorrows sit and weep.
The dish ran away with the spoon.

 *4. METONYMY*
Metonymy is meant for a change of name.
Metonymy is a figure of speech that replaces the name of a thing with the name of something else with which it is closely associated. We can come across examples of metonymy both from literature and in everyday life.
Following examples will clarify the concept.

*The pen is mightier than the sword i.e wisdom is better than power.
*From the cradle to the grave i.e from childhood to death.
*I have never read Milton i.e the works of Milton.
